German smokers

Smoking men or "Rauchermaenner" are handcrafted wooden incense burners that date back many years ago.  The Erzgebirge region of Germany (the Ore Mountains) was popular for its mining of ore, gold, and other minerals.  The men that worked in these mines also had knowledge of how to work with wood since they made wood containers, water wheels and other wood items used in mining.  In order to provide more for their families many of the miners, after working the mines all day, had already begun to carve figures out of wood.  As time went on and the mining industry diminished many of the miners turned primarily to woodcarving as their major source of income.  The ides of burning incense dates back even further than the smoking men themselves.  Incense was burned as a way of blessing the home.  Today, incense along with these smoking men give the home a nice comfortable cozy feeling.

German smokers are carved to represent professionals, hobbyists as well as everyday life people.  These unique figures are individually hand carved and hand painted by some of the best wood turners in the Erzgebirge.

To operate the smoker, separate the upper and lower parts of the smoker.  Then place the incense on the metal plate and light the incense.  Lastly connect the upper and lower parts and watch the smoke from the mouth (or opening) of the smoker.  For safety reasons children must be supervised when operating a smoker.
